Calling all parents! Are you protein obsessed? Have you tried countless protein powders? And are you now obsessed about your children getting enough protein? I am, me, over here! Its also exacerbated by the fact that I’m a child of the 80s and my mum has drilled it in to me!

Protein is the powerhouse of all nutrients, essential for building and repairing muscles, bones, skin, and other tissues. And as a parent, you want your children to have everything they need to thrive, right?

So, how much protein do your children need? Well, it depends on their age and size, but a general rule is to aim for 1 gram of protein per kilogram of their body weight each day. That means a 25-kilogram child needs around 25 grams of protein daily.

So, where does all this protein come from …

  • Meat: From hearty beef stews to succulent roast chicken, meat is a great source of protein.
  • Fish: Fish is packed with protein and brain-boosting omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Eggs: Eggs are a fantastic source of protein. Try scrambled, boiled or even an omelette to mix things up.
  • Dairy: Milk, cheese, yogurt - they're all dairy products that are rich in protein and calcium, which is essential for building strong bones. A glass of milk and some cheese on toast make great snacks too!
  • Beans and legumes: baked beans are always a winner in my house, but there are plenty of other beans and legumes to try, like lentils and chickpeas. They're not only high in protein but also high in fibre and make a great addition to soups and stews.
  • Nuts and seeds: From crunchy peanuts to roasted almonds, nuts and seeds make great snacks and are packed with protein and healthy fats.

By including protein in every meal and snack, you can help your kids grow up strong, healthy, and full of energy! BUT and it’s a big BUT, what happens when your family won’t eat some or any of the options above?
